Picking a Plant Pot

So, you’ve spotted a beautiful ceramic cover pot, and you think it’ll pair perfectly with a houseplant you’ve had your eye on - but how do you guarantee they’ll fit together? Fortunately, the information you need is there, you just need to know what to look for.

  • Plant: you need to know the ‘pot size’, which is the diameter of the plastic nursery pot that the plant is in

  • Cover pot: you need to know the ‘pot opening size’, which is the diameter of the ‘hole’ the plant will go into

If the plant’s nursery pot size is less than the pot opening size, they will fit together.

The plant’s ‘pot size’ needs to be smaller than the pot’s ‘opening size’, so that they can fit together.

Examples:

  • You want to buy a Prayer Plant, which comes in a 12cm nursery pot. For a cover pot to fit, it needs to have an opening of 12.5cm or above.

  • You’ve bought a snake plant, which comes in a 15cm nursery pot. For a cover pot to fit, it needs to have an opening of 15.5cm or above.

  • If you buy a 14cm plant and a pot with an opening of 13cm, they will not fit together. For a 14cm plant, you need a pot with an opening of at least 14.5cm

The pot opening must always be at least 0.5cm larger than the plant’s nursery pot width.
